Samba Zona Sul and Paraiso School of Samba Bateria play side by side at Ferrier International Feast Day 2004
Bringing Communities Together Through Samba
Samba Xchange is a project developed with the help of Creative Partnerships - London South, enabling A2 Arts College in Greenwich and Paraiso School of Samba to develop a community Samba Group "Samba Zona Sul". The band has been in existence for a couple of years and has played at many local and London-wide festivals and carnivals both alone and in unison with the Paraiso. This year (2005) several young people from samba Zona Sul played and danced with Paraiso in their stunning championship winning parade at Notting Hill carnival. This is the first time in the 40 year history of Notting Hill Carnival that a Brazilian group has been champions.
2006 sees a cultural exchange to Rio de Janeiro for Samba Zona Sul and a widening of the project to bring Afro Brazilian Culture to the Communities of Greenwich, particularly to the SRB5 area, with the help of local community groups such as The Community Events Group. Paraiso School of Samba, which until now has had no permanent base, will begin to make its home in Greenwich and, with the help of Creative Partnerships and all the other groups involved, will continue to work to bring Samba to the Community.
